Applications are now open for Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter’s homeownership program for ten new homes being built throughout Lake and Sumter Counties.

Homes available for purchase through the Home Ownership Program are located across Lake and Sumter, including Tavares, Leesburg, Bushnell, Wildwood and Oxford. To learn more about Habitat’s Home Ownership program and how to apply, visit www.habitatls.org/apply.

Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter builds and sells affordable homes to individuals and families in Lake and Sumter counties who demonstrate need, meet program guidelines, and can sustain a monthly mortgage. In partnership with donors and volunteers, Habitat Lake-Sumter’s Home Ownership program provides families access, opportunity, and guidance on attaining an affordable home.

Families partner with Habitat to pay an affordable mortgage. Applicants must meet a variety of criteria: have a target credit score of around 640, live or work in Lake or Sumter County, demonstrate a need for the program, have verifiable income, and fall within HUD definined income limits.

Applicants must also be willing to partner with Habitat for up to 12 months, including completing 200 hours of  “sweat equity,” which shows they are invested in the outcome of their new home. Sweat Equity is earned through several different activities such as volunteering on a Habitat worksite, in the ReStores, and through educational courses such as a First Time Homebuyer, Financial Literacy, and Credit Counseling classes.
